Steve Smith, who smashed his 29th Test century during the series opener between Australia and West Indies, has converted the same into a double-ton. The Australian vice-captain accomplished the milestone on Day 2 of the contest at the Perth Cricket Stadium.
Smith has raced to four double centuries. By doing so, he has equaled former Aussie legends Greg Chappell and Michael Clarke (4 each). He has also matched the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Hashim Amla, Gordon Greenidge, Kane Williamson, Mohammad Yousuf, Brendon McCullum Zaheer Abbas, and L Hutton in terms of four double tons.
Smith has 8,361 runs and an average of 61.47 in Test cricket. Against West Indies, he hammered his maiden double-ton. His previous highest score versus WI was 199. Across eight innings, Smith has piled up over 680 runs versus WI with an average of over 229.
Earlier on Day 2, Smith surpassed the 4,000-run mark on home soil (4,101). He has an average of over 66. He has 15 tons and 16 fifties at home. In four innings versus the Windies, Smith has 414 runs. He has two centuries and a fifty versus WI.
Marnus Labuschagne (204) and Smith have each scored a double-century in the same Test innings. It's the first time any two players have done so since Ricky Ponting (221) and Michael Clarke (210) against India in January 2012.
