Why is the UN High Seas Treaty important

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Protecting ocean life

More than 200 countries have agreed to the UN High Seas Treaty, which aims to place 30% of the world's oceans into protected areas by 2030.

2

Sustainability

Environmentalists consider the treaty as a way to undo biodiversity losses and ensure sustainable development.

3

Securing ocean waters

The high seas account for more than 60% of the world's oceans by surface area, but only 1.2% of these waters are protected.

4

Safeguarding marine life

The treaty also involves imposing restrictions on fishing, shipping, and exploration activities such as deep-sea mining.

5

EU funding

In this regard, the European Union (EU) has decided to donate approximately €820 million for international ocean protection.

6

Ratify treaty measures

Countries will now have to formally agree to the treaty and look for practical ways to implement the measures.
