WhatsApp releases safety tool on beta

Secure messaging

WhatsApp is testing a safety tool for Android users that allows them to view messages from unknown numbers without alerting the sender.

The app will now show a new screen, called 'Safety tools' when you receive a message from an unknown number for the first time.

Feature

The tool will offer two options: to block or report the sender. The sender cannot see if you have read the message or not, even if the "read receipts" option is enabled.

Tips

The tool will also provide tips for safe messaging on WhatsApp, such as suggesting users to check the profile name and country code of the unknown phone number.

Accessibility

The feature is being released to beta users as part of the Android beta update, carrying version number 2.23.16.6. We will have to wait until it gets a wider rollout.
