Webb spots universe's earliest galaxies

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Cosmic web

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a "cosmic web" of 10 galaxies that formed 830 million years after the Big Bang.

2

Galaxies

The newly-identified thread-like filamentary structure of galaxies ranges about three million light-years long, according to NASA.

3

Galactic clusters

This filament structure could evolve to become a massive cluster of galaxies like the Coma Cluster, which contains thousands of systems.

4

Quasar

Interestingly, this filament is supported by a bright quasar, which is a galaxy that contains an active, supermassive black hole at its center.

5

Evidence

Additionally, Webb provided the "best evidence" of how early supermassive black holes could govern star formation in galaxies.
