The image shows us a never-seen-before view of a galaxy cluster called SMACS 0723. It covers a patch of this sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length.
Image reveals earliest galaxies
The image by Webb telescope captured starlight from objects that formed only a few million years after the Big Bang. The starlight is older than 13 billion years.
How was the image taken?
The image was taken by Webb telescope’s Near-Infrared camera. Galaxy cluster SMACS 0723’s gravitational field magnified the light from galaxies behind it for a clearer view.
About Webb telescope
The James Webb Space Telescope was launched in 2021 and it costs around $10bn. It is orbiting in the second Lagrange region. With JWST, we will see more of the unexplored universe.
