Scientists create concrete from potatoes

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Space concrete

Scientists have developed concrete made of potato starch, salt, and space dust, which is suitable for constructing buildings on Mars and the Moon.

2

Strength doubled

Dubbed "StarCrete," the new material exhibited compressive strength of 72 Megapascals (MPa), about twice more than ordinary concrete.

3

Potato-based concrete

The team estimated that about 25 kilograms of dehydrated potatoes were sufficient to produce half a ton of StarCrete, which is enough to make about 213 bricks.

4

StarCrete strengthened by salt

Magnesium chloride was found to significantly improve the strength of StarCrete. This common salt is present in Martian soil.

5

Greener concrete potential

StarCrete could have potential implications on Earth as well, serving as a greener alternative to traditional concrete.
