NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has discovered four of the oldest known galaxies, formed when the universe was less than 350 million years old.
2
Unveiling cosmic history
Interestingly, the galaxies are said to belong to a period called "the epoch of reionization," when the first stars are predicted to have originated.
3
Redshift
Light from distant galaxies undergoes stretching, called redshift, due to the expansion of the universe. Webb is designed to detect this kind of infrared light.
4
Extremely early galaxies
The four galaxies had extreme redshifts and were discovered to have formed 300 to 500 million years after the Big Bang.
5
Distant galaxy
The farthest galaxyis JADES-GS-z13-0 which formed 320 million years after the Big Bang.
