NASA's Perseverance Rover has collected the first Martian sample, a 6cm sedimentary rock, as part of its new science campaign in Jezero Crater.

As part of the latest science campaign, the rover is probing an ancient river delta on Mars in search of signs of past microbial life.

On March 30, the rover drilled into a rock named 'Berea' to collect the sample, which the team named 'Melyn.'

Exploring Martian rocks

The Perseverance Rover has collected 16 Martian rock specimens so far. It has also picked up other sample types such as regolith, which is broken rock and dust.

Exciting rock discovery

The team is excited about the new rock specimen, as it is rich in carbonate. The obtained specimens could hold information about the past life on, Mars if it ever existed.
