NASA's Hubble marks 33 years in space

NASA's Hubble Telescope marks 33 years in space, today. The telescope has made well over 1.5 million observations to date.

Universe 

Based on Hubble's discovery of the Cepheid stars, scientists estimated the age of the universe as 13.8 billion years, approximately three times Earth's age.

Cometary impact witnessed

Hubble telescope captured a rare cometary impact in 1994 when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter leaving behind large plumes of debris.

Exoplanet

Hubble telescope detected sodium in the atmosphere of exoplanet HD 209458-b, marking the first time an atmospheric element has been found outside our solar system.

Eagle Nebula

The iconic "Pillars of Creation," or the Eagle Nebula which plays host to star formation, was snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995.
