NASA skywatching guide for December

Celestial events

This December will be filled with exciting celestial events, including the year's most spectacular meteor shower, and a visible ancient asteroid.

Geminid meteor shower

The Geminid meteor shower, known for being the most reliable and abundant annual meteor shower of the year, will peak on December 13.

Asteroid Vesta

Throughout the month, the massive asteroid Vesta, which is the brightest asteroid visible from Earth, will be seen at its best.

Grouping

From December 7 to 10, witness the grouping of Venus, the crescent Moon, and the bright star Spica in the southeast morning skies.

Crescent moon-Saturn encounter

On December 17, spot a stunning crescent moon near Saturn in the southwest sky after sunset.

New moon

The new moon on December 12 provides ideal dark sky conditions for viewing faint celestial objects.

Full moon

A bright full moon will be visible on December 26, appearing exceptionally large and bright on Christmas.
