Key facts about ESA's Euclid mission

Exploring cosmic mysteries

European Space Agency (ESA) will launch the Euclid mission on July 1. The space telescope will specifically explore the universe's dark matter and dark energy.

Observations

Euclid will create the largest, most accurate 3D map of the universe, according to ESA. It will observe over one-third of the sky.

Vantage point

Euclid will be positioned at the L2 Lagrange point, about 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. It shares the location with the James Webb Space Telescope.

Sky surveys

The Euclid mission will survey 5,000 square degrees of sky, producing four times sharper images compared to ground-based surveys.

Launch

As per the current schedule, Euclid will launch on July 1, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission will operate for at least six years.
