1

JWST discoveries

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made new discoveries on Jupiter's moons Io and Ganymede.

2

Sulfur monoxide on Io

The telescope, for the first time, detected sulfur monoxide gas on Io, which is the most volcanically active body in the solar system.

3

Ganymede

Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide was discovered in Ganymede's polar regions, a first for the largest moon in the solar system.

4

Outer solar system insights

The latest Webb findings have major implications for our understanding of icy bodies in the outer solar system.

5

Radiolysis on Ganymede

Hydrogen peroxide on Ganymede is believed to be the result of radiolysis, a process where charged particles break apart water molecules.

6

Io's active volcanoes

Sulfur monoxide on Io was detected during an eruption from one of its known volcanoes called Kanehekili Fluctus.
