Exploring cosmic depths

NASA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has marked one year of science investigations. To celebrate this milestone, NASA has released a stunning new image.

2

Rho Ophiuchi

The latest Webb image is of the closest star-forming region to Earth, called Rho Ophiuchi, which lies about 390 light years from us.

3

Sun-like stars

The image reveals 50 young Sun-like stars enveloped in gas clouds, with some showing signs of protoplanetary disks, which could form new planetary systems.

4

Glimpse of stellar youth

The bright red regions are actually "jets of molecular hydrogen." Stars emit these jets when they break out of the dust clouds they were formed in.

5

Stars

A prominent feature in the image is the "glowing cave of dust" that houses a star. This star is "significantly more massive than the Sun," says NASA.
