James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Hubble Space Telescope, and NASA's Juno spacecraft will collaborate to study Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io.
2
Investigation
Led by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), the investigation will use data from Hubble and JWST to better understand Io's extreme volcanism and its impact on the Jovian system.
3
Io
Io is the most volcanically active world in the solar system. It is believed to be home to hundreds of volcanoes, some spurting lava several kilometers high.
4
Juno's distant flyby
Juno, which has been investigating the Jovian system since 2016, will make a distant flyby of Io on September 20, with Hubble and JWST observing simultaneously.
5
Collaboration
According to SwRI, another chance for similar observations of Io may not arise until at least the 2030s, making this collaboration all the more crucial.
