ISRO satellite re-entry mission tomorrow

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Re-entry of the MT1 satellite

ISRO is set to conduct a challenging experiment of controlled re-entry of the now-defunct Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1) satellite on March 7.

2

ISRO's challenge

The MT1 satellite was not designed for end-of-life (EOL) operations through controlled re-entry, which makes this experiment challenging.

3

Re-entry

An uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean is identified as the targeted re-entry zone. The final two de-boost burns are expected to occur between 4:30-7:30 pm on March 7.

4

Predictions

Simulations reveal that large fragments of the satellite are not likely to survive the aerothermal heating during re-entry.

5

Testing

Furthermore, MT1's re-entry experiment provides a unique opportunity to test relevant methodologies.
