By Sanjana Shankar

1

Trials

ISRO conducted Rail Track Rocket Sled deployment tests of the Gaganyaan Pilot and Apex Cover Separation (ACS) parachutes in cluster configurations at TBRL, in Chandigarh.

2

Pilot parachutes

The first test simulated the clustered deployment of two pilot parachutes. The parachutes were subjected to minimum angle and maximum angles with respect to flow conditions.

3

ACS parachute testing

The second test simulated the clustered deployment of two ACS parachutes under maximum dynamic pressure conditions.

4

Development

The parachute system for the Gaganyaan mission has been jointly developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE).

6

Gaganyaan mission

Gaganyaan is India's first crewed mission to space. The mission will send a three-membered crew to an orbit of 400 kilometers for a period of three days.
