India may sign up for Artemis Accords

NASA wants India to sign up for the Artemis Accords, a framework that establishes a set of common guidelines for safe space exploration.

Establishment

The Artemis Accords were established in 2020 by US-backed NASA along with other founding nations, including Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Exploring space together

India will be the 26th nation to join Artemis Accords. NASA expects more nations to collaborate in the future.

Principles

The Artemis Accords operate on about 10 key principles, which include peaceful space exploration and preserving the heritage of outer space.

Guidelines

The Artemis Accords seek to ensure "civil space activities." The signatories of the accords must also work toward "mitigation of orbital debris."
