How astronauts grew tomatoes on the ISS

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Return

During their five-month mission, NASA-SpaceX Crew-5 astronauts conducted several scientific experiments on the ISS, including growing tomatoes.

2

Study

A popular dwarf variety of cherry tomatoes, called 'Red Robin,' was grown in "Veggie chambers" under two different light conditions on the ISS.

3

Crop growth in space

The tomato plants were grown in what's called 'pillows,' which are bags with a wicking surface containing soilless substrate and fertilizer.

4

Survey

The astronauts undergo a taste test after eating fresh tomatoes. They also take questionnaires to assess the psychological benefits of interacting with plants in space.

5

Implications

The study could have significant implications for future crewed missions, like missions to Mars, which would require a fresh food supply, along with pre-packaged meals.
