FCC revises broadband speed

Broadband redefined

The FCC has redefined broadband as 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds, up from the previous 25Mbps/3Mbps standard.

Addressing rural gap

This change impacts the FCC's ability to measure and address the US broadband gap, with nearly 28% of rural Americans lacking access to these new speeds.

Terrestrial broadband unavailability

Fixed terrestrial broadband remains unavailable to about 24 million Americans, including over 23% of those on tribal lands.

School districts' progress

Based on a new benchmark, 74% of school districts meet the 1Gbps per 1,000 students and staff goal, leaving many still falling short.

Democratic majority shift

The redefinition was facilitated by the FCC's Democratic majority, marking a significant shift in internet speed standards.
