1

Deepest fish found

Scientists have discovered the deepest-ever fish, a snailfish, at a depth of 8,336 meters in the Izu-Ogasawara trench, south of Japan.

2

Record

According to the team, the snailfish are the first to have ever been collected from a depth greater than 8,000 meters, setting a new record.

3

Snailfish

There are over 400 known species of snailfish, which are found in a variety of habitats, from shallow waters to deep oceans.

4

Adaptive snailfish

Some snailfish have adaptations that allow them to live 1,000 meters deeper than other deep-sea fish, according to Alan Jamieson, the chief scientist who led the expedition.

5

Juvenile snailfish

The recently-discovered snailfish was classified as juvenile. These young snailfish are usually found at greater depths when compared to adult ones.
