The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the Euclid mission on July 1. The space telescope will explore the dark side of the cosmos.
2
Euclid
Euclid will observe billions of galaxies, across a third of the sky, to shed light on dark matter and dark energy that together make up 95% of the universe.
3
Instruments
Euclid carries a 1.2-meter-wide mirror and two instruments: a visible imager and a near-infrared spectrometer and photometer for science investigations.
4
Exploring the cosmos
Euclid will conduct observations from a halo orbit around the L2 Lagrange point, which lies about 1.6 million km from Earth.
5
Lifetime
In the upcoming months, Euclidwill be subjected to calibrations and testing before it can start operations. The mission is expected to last six years.
