EU slaps $1.3 billion fine on Meta

Massive fine

Meta was fined $1.3bn by the Irish privacy watchdog for breaking EU privacy rules. It's the largest fine under Europe's data protection regime.

Transferring data

The company was fined for transferring the Facebook data of EU citizens to the US. The Irish DPC said Meta did not address associated risks.

Illegal

Meta transferred data under the Privacy Shield agreement between the US and EU. The agreement was struck down in 2020 by EU's top court.

Origin

The complaint against Meta dates back to 2013. It stems from Edward Snowden's revelations about the US's mass surveillance programs.

Implication

The ruling will affect Meta's ad revenue as data transfer to the US is important for targeted advertising. Meta said it will appeal the decision
