CEIR system to help track lost phones

Track lost phones

The government's Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) initiative will help you track a lost or stolen smartphone and block it from being used further.

New system

The CEIR system, headed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is likely to be launched this week. The tentative launch date is May 17.

IMEI number

The government mandates that the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number should be disclosed before a mobile is sold in India.

Locate lost phones

The CEIR system will allow telecom operators to access IMEI numbers and the associated mobile numbers. Further, it will block cloned handsets.

Traceability

"If anyone tries to use the blocked mobile phone, its traceability is generated," mentions the official CEIR website.
