Black holes may lie closer than we think

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Black holes

A study suggests that the Hyades star cluster, which lies just 150 light-years away, could be hiding two or three stellar-mass black holes.

2

Hyades

Located in the Taurus constellation, the 625-million-year-old Hyades is an open cluster of stars visible to the naked eye.

3

Analysis

Astronomers analyzed data from ESA's Gaia spacecraft and computer simulations to search for black holes in the star cluster.

4

Validation

The best model predicts the presence of two or three stellar-mass black holes, but more observations are needed for confirmation.

5

Proximity

Notably, these black holes could be over 10 times closer to our solar system than previously thought.
