1

Ax-2 mission

For the first time, stem cells will be grown in space, by astronauts flying to the International Space Station (ISS) on Axiom Space's Ax-2 mission.

2

Space-grown stem cells

The Ax-2 mission is scheduled to launch on May 21. Specifically, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) will be tested.

3

iPSCs

iPSCs have the capacity to self-renew and develop into the three primary groups of cells that constitute a human body.

4

Study

Scientists want to investigate if stem cells will grow faster, have lesser genetic mutations, and remain in a pluripotent state in space.

5

Axiom Space

Ax-2 will be the second mission that Texas-based Axiom Space is sending to the ISS. The company launched its first ISS mission, Ax-1, in April 2022.
