Auroras spotted in India: Why it’s rare

By Sanjana Shankar

1

Auroras in India!

For the first time, an aurora was snapped on camera in India. It was captured by Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO).

2

Cause

Auroras are caused due to interactions between high-energy particles streaming from the Sun's atmosphere and the Earth's magnetic field.

3

Aurora lights

Depending on the altitude and the type of molecules involved, the color of the auroras changes.

4

CMEs

The actual cause of the geomagnetic storm, sparking the auroras, was a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupting from the Sun on April 21.

5

Rare phenomenon

The auroras seen in India occurred at latitudes lower than usual and the rare spectacle could have been observed from Europe, and China as well.
