How to make a DIY terrarium

By Simran Jeet

1

Choose container

Select a clear container with a wide opening for your terrarium, such as an aquarium or mason jar.

2

Pick houseplants

Choose small houseplants like ferns, mosses, and fittonia to complement the container's size and shape.

3

Drainage layer

Create a drainage layer with coarse gravel or stones, followed by a layer of activated charcoal to prevent fungi growth.

4

Soil preparation

Add sheet moss and potting mixture on top, filling one-quarter to one-third of the container.

5

Planting greenery

Carefully plant your chosen greenery in the soil, covering them with half an inch of soil for stability.

6

Personalize terrarium

Personalize your terrarium with decorative items like marbles, shells, or small figurines.

7

Light & watering

For cacti and dry-loving plants, use open containers and place them in bright, indirect sunlight or under a 100-watt light for 16-18 hours daily.

8

Terrarium maintenance

Water closed terrariums every four-five months and use a spray bottle for open ones to avoid overhydration.
