The South Indian film industry has bounced back after a COVID-19-induced slump, growing by 96% from $486M in 2021 to $955M in 2022.

Tamil hits like 'Ponniyin Selvan' and 'Vikram' contributed the most to the growth, followed by Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam industries.

CII released a report titled 'South India: Setting Benchmarks for the Nation in Media & Entertainment', during the Dakshin Conference.

Box office bonanza

South Indian films ruled the box office in 2022, with 'RRR' and 'KGF: Chapter 2' earning over Rs. 1,200cr and Rs. 1,148cr respectively.

Film market shrinks

Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam markets will grow by 15%, 5%, and 11% respectively, but Kannada market will shrink by 47%. The film market is expected to shrink by 1% in 2023.
