Veteran British actor Michael Gambon, best known for playing Dumbledore in six Harry Potter movies, died aged 82 on Thursday evening. His family said he succumbed to pneumonia.

His family's statement said, "Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia."

With a prolific six-decade-long career, Gambon had 148 film and TV credits by 2015, including 'The King's Speech' and 'Gosford Park.'

The esteemed actor received four BAFTAs for his television work in 'The Singing Detective,' 'Wives & Daughters,' 'Longitude,' and 'Perfect Strangers.'
