Early days

Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, spent her early years in Detroit before moving to Houston, where her R&B group friends named her 'Lizzo.'

Initial days of music

At 14, she began rapping and taking flute lessons. She studied classical flute at the University of Houston but eventually dropped out.

Career as solo artist

After dropping out of college, Lizzo moved to Minneapolis and joined various R&B groups before embarking on her solo career in 2013.

Her first album

Signed by Atlantic Records in 2015, she released her first solo album, 'Lizzobangers,' featuring experimental production from Minneapolis-based indie hip-hop producers.

Breakthrough

Lizzo's breakthrough came with her 2017 single 'Truth Hurts,' which gained popularity after being featured in a Netflix movie. She eventually won four Grammy Awards by 2023.
