New TCS on overseas credit card payments

By Athik Saleh

1

Tax on overseas spend

The Indian government will impose a 20% TCS on international credit card transactions from July 1, affecting frequent overseas spenders.

2

More expensive vacations

If you travel abroad and use your credit card to make payments, you have to pay an extra 20% to the original bill.

3

Products and service

The 20% TCS will apply to the purchase of products and services from overseas. Be it a musing streaming service from UK or a SaaS product from the US.

4

Tour packages

The government has also increased the TCS on overseas tour packages from 5% to 20%. It will be applicable regardless of the mode of payment.

5

TCS collection

The new TCS has to be paid upfront. The credit card-issuing bank will deposit the 20% TCS against the customer's PAN.

6

Education and medical expenses

TCS rate won't apply to education and medical expenses. However, remittances above Rs. 7 lakh for foreign education attract a TCS.
