Microsoft will pay $20mn to FTC

Microsoft settles 

Microsoft has agreed to pay the FTC $20 million over a case related to the violation of children's privacy.

Accusation

The FTC filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for violating the privacy of children (users under 13) who created Xbox accounts between 2015-2020.

Without consent

Microsoft is accused of collecting personal information from underage Xbox users and retaining that without parental consent.

COPPA

The FTC accused Microsoft of violating COPPA. Under COPPA, companies must obtain parental consent before collecting and storing the personal information of underage users.

Underage sign-up changes

Microsoft is required to change the sign-up process for underage users. It will ask for the date of birth first from now on.
