A consumer court ordered ITC to pay the complainant Rs. 1 lakh in compensation for selling biscuit packets with one less biscuit than advertised.
2
Consumer's surprising discovery
Chennai resident P. Dillibabu found that the 'Sun Feast Marie Light' packet contained just 15 biscuits, as against the 16 claimed.
3
Cost cheated by ITC
With each biscuit priced at Rs. 0.75 and the company producing approximately 50 lakh packets daily, it was estimated that ITC was shortchanging the public by over Rs. 29 lakh daily.
4
ITC's defense
ITC defended itself by claiming biscuits were sold based on weight, not quantity, but independent assessments found the packets were also underweight.
5
Consumer court's ruling
The Chennai-based consumer court ruled in favor of Dillibabu, ordering ITC to pay compensation and cease sales of the disputed batch.
