Sweden is constructing the world's first permanent electrified motorway to recharge electric vehicles while driving.
2
E20 route
Sweden has chosen European route 20 (E20) for its electrification project, connecting three major cities and logistic hubs, with completion expected by 2025.
3
Charging method
The charging method is yet to be chosen. The three available charging methods for vehicles are conductive (ground-based), catenary, and inductive.
4
Inductive charging
Sweden is expected to use an inductive charging system, which uses a pad/plate under the road to transfer electricity to EVs when they pass over.

Electrifying roads in Europe
Sweden aims to electrify 3,000km of roads by 2035 and is partnering with France and Germany for research collaboration.
