Zelenskyy confirms new talks with US after Oval Office disaster
What's the story
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that talks with United States officials are set for next week in Saudi Arabia to end the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The announcement comes as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron approach European leaders about Ukraine's situation, looking for nations ready to send troops for a peacekeeping force.
Peace commitment
Zelenskyy emphasizes Ukraine's focus on peace
In his address on Thursday, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is "most interested in peace."
He also hinted that relations between the US and Ukraine were improving following his catastrophic White House visit.
"I am scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia to meet with the crown prince. After that, my team will stay in Saudi Arabia to work with American partners."
He added, "As we told President Trump, Ukraine is working and will work exclusively constructively for a quick and reliable peace."
Aid suspension
US pauses military aid to Ukraine
Following the public spat at the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump had suspended military aid to Ukraine.
Since then, US officials have welcomed a letter Zelenskyy sent to Trump.
"We are now in discussions to coordinate a meeting with the Ukrainians in Riyadh or even potentially Jeddah," senior US official Steve Witkoff said.
He called the letter "a positive first step" and said Washington is now working to lay the groundwork for a possible peace deal in Ukraine.

EU leaders agree on defense surge
Simultaneously, European leaders on Thursday backed plans to increase defense spending while also pledging to continue supporting Ukraine.
The European Union's defense meeting in Brussels took place amid fears that Russia, emboldened by its war in Ukraine, could strike an EU country next and that Europe can no longer rely on the US to intervene.
In a joint statement, the leaders of the 27 countries urged their ministers to examine these proposals immediately.
