Controversial preacher Zakir Naik on his way back to India
Controversial preacher Zakir Naik is on his way back to India. Naik, who is known for hate speeches had allegedly inspired an ISIS terrorist involved in 2016 Dhaka attack. He had left India in 2016, and had been in living in Putrajaya, Malaysia with a permanent residency, embraced by top government officials. Malaysia's new regime, now, has decided to send Naik back, it seems.
NIA had filed a criminal case against Naik in 2016
National Investigation Authority Director Yogesh Chandra Modi has confirmed Naik's extradition. The NIA had filed a criminal case against Naik in 2016, accusing him under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In November 2017, a Mumbai court had declared Naik to be a "proclaimed offender", the government declared Naik's Islamic Research Foundation to be an "unlawful association".
India had been demanding Naik's extradition for a while now
Indian investigators had been demanding Naik's extradition for a while now. However, Malaysia had refused saying that India had failed to get a red corner notice issued against Naik. Following the exit of the Rajib Nazak government in Malaysia earlier this year, there had already been speculations about a change of policy concerning Naik in the new government. Seems like they came true.
