Every year, 5 June is celebrated as World Environment Day - the largest and the most celebrated day for conserving and preserving the nature and environment. This year, the theme is "Connecting People to Nature." Let's know more about the day!
About World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on 5 June. It is the United Nations' principal vehicle to encourage global awareness and action for environmental protection. It has become an international platform for public outreach as over 143 nations celebrate the day annually. Every year, a new theme is set which is adopted for advocating environmental causes; it was first celebrated in 1973.
Events related to environmental conservation
WED is a flagship campaign for increasing awareness of environmental issues, from global warming to marine pollution, to wildlife crime to sustainable consumption. Individuals/organizations organize events related to environment like clean up campaigns, art exhibits, tree-planting drives, concerts, dance-recitals, recycling drives, social media campaigns and different contests themed around nature conservation. People are motivated to take an initiative toward protecting environment.
Theme for 2017
According to the United Nations, this year's theme 'Connecting People to Nature' "implores us to get outdoors, into the nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share."
Canada, the official host of 2017 events
A different country hosts the World Environment day every year where official celebrations take place. Canada is the global host this year; its rich, spectacular and natural heritage is a source of pride for the people there. World Environment Day is a significant part of Canada's 150th anniversary. Abundant natural resources support the country's economic prosperity through sustainable use and tourism.
Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan's message to Indians
Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, addressed the people of India, especially the youth, on the eve of World Environment Day. He said the real sentiment behind celebrating it should not be restricted to one day but must pervade throughout the year. He emphasized the necessity to create positive energy and awakening among people.
PM Narendra Modi's vision of Swachh Bharat
Vardhan urged people to use public transport and cycles, reduce the use of air conditioners, and work towards realizing PM Narendra Modi's vision of Swachh Bharat and cleanliness. He appealed to people to use water judiciously and directed his Ministry to start water conservation.
