Who is Sarah Boardman, artist behind Trump's 'worst' portrait?
What's the story
US President Donald Trump has complained about a portrait of himself at Colorado's State Capitol.
The painting by local artist Sarah Boardman was "purposefully distorted" and "truly the worst" ever made of him, he said.
The 78-year-old Republican leader posted on his Truth Social platform.
The Colorado-based artist had depicted Trump in a dark suit and red tie.
Artistic background
Boardman's artistic journey and style
The British-born artist, living in Colorado Springs, had painted Trump's presidential portrait that was hung in the State Capitol in 2019.
The 63-year-old studied art in Germany and trained under an Alt Meister.
According to her bio, she is committed to portraying an individual's "personality, character, and soul" through her work.
Boardman has painted five presidential portraits, including one of Obama, which Trump said "looks wonderful."
Discontent
Trump's criticism and call for removal
Trump's criticism of the Colorado portrait was stark.
"Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves...was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before."
He also claimed that many people from Colorado had called and written to complain about the painting.
Trump further criticized Colorado's Democratic Governor Jared Polis, "extremely weak on Crime," after requesting the removal of his portrait from the State Capitol.
Artist's stance
Boardman's response to Trump's criticism
While Boardman hasn't responded to Trump's comments yet, she earlier described her depiction of him as "serious, thoughtful, non-confrontational."
When commissioning the portrait in 2018, she had offered two sketches and four photographs as possible references. The Capitol building's advisory committee chose her preferred option.
When questioned if personal feelings had influenced her work on Trump's portrait, Boardman said such emotions are left outside the studio as per her training.
