Prince Harry to marry American girlfriend Meghan Markle
Britain's Royal Family is set to welcome a new member into its folds: Meghan Markle, Prince Harry's fiancé. Prince Charles has announced the two will tie the knot next spring. They got engaged earlier in November. The couple will live at the Nottingham Cottage at London's Kensington Palace. Days ago, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Who is Meghan Markle?
Since Harry first confirmed Markle as his girlfriend in November last year, the American actress' popularity has shot up in the UK. Markle, who is most known for playing Rachel Zane in the TV series 'Suits', has appeared in several other shows including 'General Hospital', 'CSI', 'Without A Trace' and 'Castle'. She has also been seen in movies like 'Remember Me' and 'Horrible Bosses'.
How did the two meet?
Harry met Markle in July'16 when the latter's friend Markus Anderson introduced the two. Both Harry and Anderson are linked to the club, Soho House. Reports of their romance hit the papers sometime in October. After a statement confirming her as his girlfriend, Prince Harry criticized the press' constant "bombardment" of her life and expressed "deep disappointment" for not being able to protect her.
Harry's engagement ring made with Princess Diana's diamonds
Reports have it that the engagement ring Harry gifted Markle was made from diamonds from a broach that once used to belong to his mother, the late Princess Diana. The Express also claimed Harry had himself designed the ring. Interestingly, this year also marks the 20th death anniversary of Diana. Older brother William had used Diana's engagement ring to propose to Kate.
What would Markle be called after the wedding?
This wedding signals a breakaway from traditions. Markle isn't the first commoner to be married into the Royal Family, but she's a divorcee. That's a first. Since Harry is now the fifth in line, it appears the Royal Family has relaxed its stance. After marriage, Markle won't be "Princess Meghan"; she'll simply adopt the feminine version of his name: "HRH Princess Henry of Wales".
