What are UK's new visa rules? Do they affect Indians?
The United Kingdom's new visa regulations, aimed at reducing migration, came into effect on Thursday. The rules were introduced by the Rishi Sunak government after a record 745,000 migrants arrived in the UK in 2022, a number Prime Minister Sunak described as "far too high." Under the new rules, British citizens and residents who want to sponsor relatives on a family visa must earn more than 55% of what they are earning.
Why does this story matter?
The British government said the new income rules ensure that families are self-sufficient and do not rely on public assistance, while also benefiting the economy. The new UK visa amendments are part of the Sunak government's immigration reforms announced last year. In May 2023, the UK government had also tightened the student visa route. Under the new rules, around 300,000 people arriving in the UK would no longer be able to do so.
Exceptions to the new UK visa salary threshold
Beginning April 11, British citizens and residents must earn a minimum yearly wage of £29,000 to sponsor their family for a UK family visa. This is up from the previous minimum yearly wage threshold of £18,600. However, healthcare and social care workers, as well as teachers on national pay scales, are not subject to this increase. Occupations on the "shortage occupation list," including roles like pharmacists, graphic designers, construction workers, and veterinarians, also have a lower salary requirement.
Understanding the points-based system for UK visas
To work in the UK, applicants must secure a skilled worker visa through the points-based system (PBS). To qualify under this system, applicants need to accumulate 70 points. A job offer above a minimum skill level and proficiency in English can earn them 50 points. The remaining 20 points can be obtained if they command a higher salary, work in an industry experiencing job shortages or possess a relevant PhD.
Impact of new visa rules on Indian nationals
The regulations are expected to significantly affect Indian nationals, who are among the top applicants for the UK's skilled work visas. Work visa grants to Indians increased by 63% from 13,380 in 2021-22 to 21,837 in 2022-23. With the salary threshold for skilled worker visas now raised, Indians earning below this limit will be ineligible to work in the UK. According to the UK government's official website, by early 2025, the minimum required income will have increased twice as much.
