Usha Vance to visit Greenland amid Trump's takeover talks
What's the story
US Second Lady Usha Vance is set to visit Greenland this week. This high-profile trip comes after Donald Trump expressed a desire to acquire the mineral-rich territory from Denmark.
During the three-day visit, she will be accompanied by one of her kids. She will visit historical sites and get an in-depth understanding of Greenlandic culture.
A highlight will be attending Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland's national dogsled race.
Opposition
Trump's interest in Greenland has drawn local criticism
Trump's renewed interest in acquiring Greenland has generated a lot of local opposition.
His National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is also expected to accompany Vance on her visit.
Despite the criticism, Trump remains firm in his belief that US control over Greenland is inevitable due to national security reasons.
The stance was reiterated by him after his second term inauguration on January 20.
Expansion
Trump's territorial ambitions extend beyond Greenland
Trump has territorial ambitions beyond Greenland.
He suggested US military intervention in Panama to take back control of the canal, that Canada should become America's 51st state, and the idea of turning Gaza into a high-end "Riviera"-like resort.
Such comments have drawn backlash from different quarters, including Copenhagen and Greenlandic leaders.
PM
Visit by US leaders a provocation: Greenland PM
Greenland's prime minister, Múte Egede, called Waltz's visit a "provocation" in an interview with Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq on Sunday.
"The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us, and the signal is not to be misunderstood," he said.
"He is Trump's confidential and closest adviser, and his presence in Greenland alone will certainly make the Americans believe in Trump's mission, and the pressure will increase after the visit," he said of Waltz's upcoming visit.
