Petition against UK school for banning strappy, sleeveless tops
A UK school has been accused of "sexualizing young girls" after it decided to ban shoulder-baring or sleeveless tops. Earlier, sixth form pupils at Simon Langton Grammar School in Kent were allowed to wear their own clothes, which they can't anymore due to new rules. Now they have launched an online petition against the move, demanding it be amended.
What does the petition say?
"This rule encourages the disturbing sexualization of young girls' bodies, most of which are underage," says the petition. "The argument that shoulders shouldn't be seen in a workplace is irrelevant, as our generation is the future workforce. It is our job to change the oppressive and demeaning standards that women are forced to abide by, or nothing will change in the future."
Students protest, but parents back new rule
Year 12 student Ania Franzcuk said, "I don't think that any clothing changes will affect pupils' work," but added that "if you are uncomfortable, you aren't going to be able to work well." However, Natalie Jones, a parent, came out in support of the notification. "…When the time comes, I would probably discourage (my daughter) from showing too much flesh at school," she said.
What does the school have to say?
However, headteacher Matthew Baxter wasn't deterred by the objections. "The subject was discussed with the deputy heads and it has been decided that both Langton schools will ensure that the same dress code applies to all students within their sixth form," he said.
