Ferocious Typhoon Lan strikes Japan
Japan has been struck by the powerful Typhoon Lan. The typhoon is reportedly carrying ferocious winds with it and is predicted to cause major flooding and mudslides. Lan has already caused heavy rainfall in several parts of Japan, which is heading to polls following the recently announced snap elections. The storm is expected to hit Tokyo soon. Here's more.
Typhoon Lan makes landfall, weakens afterwards
According to Japan's weather agency, the typhoon made landfall at Shizuoka, located 175 km from Tokyo in Japan's southern coast and brought wind gusts of up to 198km/h with it. It has since weakened into a category-2 storm and is reportedly proceeding toward the north-east at 59 km/h. Lan is expected to pass through Tokyo during the morning rush hour.
Typhoon Lan brings Japan's regular grind to a halt
At least two people have reportedly been killed and 10 others injured. Several parts of Japan experienced heavy rainfall. Japanese authorities have canceled at least 800 flights over two days in the wake of Typhoon Lan, along with ferry services. Power blackouts reportedly caused passenger trains to get stranded. Meanwhile, a record number of citizens reportedly voted ahead of the storm.
