Tunisia: DJ plays Muslim prayer remix, sparks outrage
A Tunisian party went horribly wrong after a European DJ played the dance remix of the Muslim call to prayer. This incident at the Orbit Festival in the north-eastern town of Nabeul outraged the Islamic world and the nightclub was closed down after that. Mnaouar Ouertani, the governor of Nabeul, said an investigation was underway and that the club would "remain closed".
Organizers and DJ shamefaced, apologize for hurting sentiments
Orbit Festival organizers apologized on their Facebook page but maintained that they weren't responsible for the offensive music played. They said that the European DJ "did not realize it might offend an audience from a Muslim country like ours". Dax J too gave his "sincere apologies to anyone who may have been offended" and said it wasn't his intention to offend anyone.
Tunisia: Country whose religion is Islam and government guards religion
Tunisia is a predominantly Muslim country with 99% population made of Sunni muslims. The country's constitution states that Tunisia's "religion is Islam" and the government is the "guardian of religion".
Tunisia says strict action to follow
Tunisian authorities said that the club's administrator had been arrested "for violation against good morals and public outrage against modesty," and further investigations were under way. Further, the governor of Nabeul, Mnaouar Ouertani said that such offenses against religious sentiments and of the sacred fabric would not be tolerated. Tunisia's religious affairs ministry said mocking opinions and religious principles of Tunisians was "absolutely unacceptable."
Similar incident leads to a Malaysian rapper's arrest
In 2016, Namewee- a Malaysian rapper was detained for a music video that ridiculed Islam. Partly filmed in a mosque it had the audio of Islamic call to prayer. He was detained for 4 days for "defiling a place of worship with intention to insult religion". The video "Oh My God," also featured the rapper singing in front of a church, and a Buddhist-temple.
