Trump to discuss China's 'predatory' trade practices during visit
A White House official said President Donald Trump will tell China to "cease predatory trade" practices during his maiden presidential visit to Beijing. Such practices include the denial of free access to American firms to the Chinese market and intellectual property rights theft. Trump is embarking on a five-nation Asia tour to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines starting on November 5.
US' burgeoning bilateral trade deficit with China a concern
The White House official said Trump will ask China to do more on North Korea. A "clear message" would be sent that "China must provide fair and reciprocal treatment to US firms and cease predatory trade and investment practices" for sustainable long-term US-China relations. In April, Trump had discussed the US' "colossal" trade deficit with China during President Xi Jinping's visit to the US.
Modi may meet Trump in Manila
India is expected to keenly track Trump's Asia visit, particularly his China visit. The US may also discuss China's aggressive Belt and Road Initiative, given that Trump earlier raised the issue of a "free and open Indo-Pacific," which concerns India. It's also possible that Indian PM Narendra Modi may meet Trump on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Manila.
