Indian-origin Surgeon General Vivek Murthy dismissed
Indian-origin Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who was appointed by the Obama Administration has been asked to leave by the Trump administration. He has been replaced by Deputy Surgeon General Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, who is the first nurse to be appointed to the top health care spot. The US Department of Health did not specify a reason for his dismissal.
Who is Vivek Murthy?
Vivek Murthy was the 19th US Surgeon General and the first Indian to hold the post. He received his MD and also an MBA in health care from Yale. He is also a practicing physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
Murthy grateful for opportunity to serve
Murthy said he was grateful that he was given the opportunity to serve as Surgeon General. He stated that under Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, "our nation is in capable and compassionate hands." However, he added that he had "hoped to do more to help our nation tackle its biggest health challenges." He will continue to serve under the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
