What's the story
14 December, 1911 was the first time an expedition successfully reached the South Pole. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and four others were the first to make it; the journey marked the first exploration by humans of the hostile conditions in Antarctica. Five weeks later, a British party led by explorer Robert Falcon Scott also reached the pole, but died on the return journey.
