Suicide bombing targeting Shiite mosque in Kabul kills 4
At least four people were killed and 20 others injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the Shiite Hussainia Mosque in central Kabul. The attack took place as worshippers were leaving the mosque after Friday prayers. This is the latest in a series of attacks targeting Afghanistan's Shiite minority. So far, no terror group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
How the attack unfolded
An official said the attacker was disguised as a sheepherder. The attacker had been confronted by police when he crossed a checkpoint close to the mosque. When police told him to stop, the bomber detonated his explosives.
Afghan President condemns the attack
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has condemned the attack, which comes two days before the Muslim holy day of Ashura. Ghani said the fact that the terrorists targeted civilians and a mosque proved that the attackers "are against humanity and anti-religion and faith." Attacks against Shiite community have risen in recent months. The Sunni-dominated ISIS-affiliate in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for several of these attacks.
