Sheikh Hasina 'returning to Bangladesh as PM,' claims close aide
What's the story
Rabbi Alam, a senior Awami League leader in the United States and a close aide of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, has announced that the deposed leader will return to power again soon.
In an ANI interview, Alam thanked India for sheltering many Bangladeshi leaders and arranging safe passage for Hasina.
"I...thank PM Narendra Modi for providing a safe travel passage for our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. We are thankful to the people of India," Alam said.
Political crisis
Bangladesh is under attack, says Alam
He also slammed Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh's interim government's chief advisor, urging him to "go back where he came from."
Alam termed the present political upheaval in Bangladesh as "terrorist uprising," calling for intervention from the international community.
He said his home country is "under attack" and that the situation needs to be dealt with by the global community.
Alam stressed that political uprisings are usual, but what is currently going on in Bangladesh is beyond that.
Political upheaval
Hasina's ouster and subsequent developments
Hasina was removed from power on August 5, after a violent student-led movement that claimed over 600 lives.
After her ousting, a caretaker government under Nobel Laureate Yunus assumed power, forcing Hasina to flee to India.
"We want to ask the Bangladesh Advisor to step down and go back to where he came from...Sheikh Hasina is coming back as the Prime Minister. The young generation has made a mistake, but that's not their fault; they have been manipulated," he said.
