Guangdong, a populous province in China, is currently facing a severe flood risk as its rivers, waterways, and reservoirs reach dangerously high levels. The local meteorological department said sections of rivers and tributaries in the Xijiang and Beijiang river basins are seeing water levels rise in a way that only has a one-in-50 chance of happening in any given year. In response to this escalating situation, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources has issued an emergency advisory.

Guangdong, a major hub of economic activity and trade, has been experiencing relentless heavy rainfall and powerful winds for several days. This severe weather has caused widespread disruption across different parts of China. A continuous downpour that lasted 12 hours from Saturday night has particularly affected central and northern Guangdong. Cities including Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, and Jiangmen have been hit hardest by this weather onslaught.

Evacuations and power outages amidst torrential rains
In Qingyuan alone, over 45,000 people have been evacuated due to the harsh weather conditions. Power facilities in Zhaoqing have suffered damage leading to power outages in some areas. As a result of the torrential rains, approximately 1.16 million households in Guangdong are without electricity. Consequently, 1,103 schools in Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan have announced class suspensions on Monday for the safety of students and staff.
